(a) The 15 item version of the Philadelphia Geriatric
Center Morale Scale (PGCMS, Lawton, 1975; Liang &
Bollen, 1983) was used to assess overall subjective well-being.
This scale was specifically designed for use with older
adults.
Responses were given on a five-point Likert-Scale (5 labelled
as "applies very well to me", 1 as "does not apply to me at all").
Higher scores on every item indicate higher subjective
well-being. (Note that items with the suffix "r" were
recoded.)
Note that one item (no. 15) was placed early in the EE interview (as
well as later in the Final
Questionnaire). This was done so that if the study participant
completed only a short interview, there would nevertheless be a
single item indicator of well-being. Responses on this item were
given on a five-point Likert-Scale (5 labeled as "very well",
1 as "unsatisfactory"). Higher scores on every item
indicate higher subjective well-being.
(b) To assess past life satisfaction, a single-item
was used from the LSI-A
(Neugarten, Havighurst & Tobin, 1961).
LISREL modeling suggested that, three factors could be extracted:
Non-agitation, satisfaction with aging and life
satisfaction.
(c) Further information about subjective well-being was collected in
the Final Questionnaire.
